Big 3…
5/21/25
Real quick, before we get into anything else, you should know I’m going to quote and reference a couple of my favorite astrologers and books and stuff OFTEN. The book You Were Born For This by Chani Nicholas, as well as her astrology app, CHANI, are what opened my mind up to astrology. They continue to be 2 of my favorite learning tools. My OTHER insane mentor and astro lover girl is Madie Murphy, creator of Cosmic Rx. She has a great podcast and some great courses. I took her Cosmic Boss mastermind course and revisit it ALL THE TIME. She also has a book coming out in July ‘25.
Ok, so if we are going to talk natal astrology we have to start with “The Big 3”: Sun, Moon, Rising. Here’s the breakdown if this means nothing to you…
If we think of our life as a big cosmic movie, here’s how it’s produced:
*Planets/Luminaries (Sun and Moon) = Actors
*Signs = Styles in which the planets act
*Houses = The scene they are starring in
And, look, I’m not going to try to go deep in this stuff with you here, but just giving you a little sip of how to understand it incase you are a little astro baby virgin, k?
Pisces Sun
Your Sun sign is the answer to the iconic pick up line from the 70s, “Girl, what’s your sign?” It’s the most popular and easiest placement to figure out. The sun stays in the same zodiac sign for roughly 4 weeks, so if you know your birthday, it’s easy to find out your Sun sign. Now, you’ll need a bit more info if you want to dive deeper into your Sun and the rest of your chart. If you have your birth date, time and location, you will be able to get such a better look at how your Sun is going to shine. That information can tell you the house your sun shines in, as well as how it’s being influenced by other planets. Myself? I’m an Aries Sun in my 5th house of creativity, pleasure, play, hobbies and children. So, I know my soul needs me to be bold, independent, a self-starter (amongst many other attributes…) in this area of my life. The Sun represents the broad strokes in the portrait that is your life. It shapes the whole picture as all life revolves around the Sun. Some people don’t identify deeply with their Sun sign, and this can be for various reasons. Maybe they are identifying with some of low-vibe frequencies of the sign? Maybe their Sun is in a place in their chart they don’t quite understand. Perhaps their sun is acting with planets that alter how it behaves? A lot of people identify so deeply with their external roles (career, parent, partner…) that they fail to identify with themselves on a soul level. There are a lot of reasons why some may not feel the warmth of their Sun, this is why it’s so cool and important to learn about it and how to better relate with it.
Capricorn Moon
Ok, anyways… THE MOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNN!!!! Girls, we love the Moon. And SHE LOVES US. Truly, we FEEL the Moon on a day to day basis in ways we just don’t feel the Sun. And that’s ok. Actually, that is amazing. The Moon changes signs about every 2ish days and she cycles from darkest dark to the most beautiful, bright and silver Goddess the sky EVER DID SEE. Listen, I know it’s so cliche and every astro person says this, but just like she dictates the ocean tides, she also controls our inner oceans. Water represents emotions and how they ebb and flow and rise and crash. The Moon is the boss. Really, she is. Have you ever seen My Big Fat Greek Wedding? In that movie the mom says “The man is the head of the house. But the woman is the NECK that turns the head in whichever way..” (ok not a direct quote, but it’s something along those lines…) Anyways… the Sun might shine bright and light up our life path, but the Moon guides our day to day and helps us feel our way through. If the Sun is the head… the Moon is the neck. I don’t know if that works… but it feels right. Your natal Moon sign, phase, and house can help you understand your needs in such a profound way. I’m talking physical and emotional, honey. She is the self-care expert. For instance, I am a Cancer Moon in my 9th house. The TLDR of this is that as a Cancer Moon, my inner workings are MUCHO sensetivo. It means when I need to ground or clear my head, take me to the bath tub. It means I’m a bit of a homebody who needs lots of rest between social interactions. It means I love to care for others, and I need to pay close attention to my emotional wellness. That is obviously not all, but we can get in to more detail later. No matter the energies she’s serving on the day to day basis based on sign and phase, I am always respecting and protecting my natal Cancer Moon.
Libra Rising
Last, the Ascendant aka the Rising Sign. The ascendant is a point on the chart that indicates the degree and sign that was rising up on the eastern horizon the moment you came out. Some would argue that this is the MOST personal placement on the chart because this point changes every couple HOURS do to Earth’s rotation on it’s axis. This point on the chart is located in the first house of self, the only house in the wheel that is solely about the self- nothing and no one else. This is the vibe that you just naturally exude, people’s first impression of you. I’m a Scorpio rising. I do feel this placement IMMENSELY… mainly the process of living many lives in one incarnation. Also just… my very Scorpio way of being since I was teeny. Deeply curious about a lot of the darker things in life, my love of night time, my fixation with witches… those are pretty surface level, which tracks because the Rising sign does have some surface level qualities, but also some much deeper and hard to explain in this novella of a blog post… It’s your style without trying, your natural essence.
Ok, that was really fooking long. If you are still reading or listening to this, wow. Thank you. Probably don’t look at a screen again for a couple of hours. Toodles.
